Environment Park and its partners support the COP26 challenges

The 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26, is the 26th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which is taking place in Glasgow (Scotland) from 31 October to 12 November 2021 under the presidency of the United Kingdom, in partnership with Italy. The COP26 summit will bring parties together to accelerate actions towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought devastation to millions around the World, disrupting many parts of the global economy. Governments, including Italy, have stepped up to protect lives and livelihoods. Climate change continues to be an emergency, and it ultimately threatens life on earth.

Italy has experienced difficulties in overcoming the COVID-19 crisis. Lately, relevant economic indicators have started to recover pre-crisis levels: the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth, even if still lagging behind those of most European countries, is reflecting a slow recovery phase. The current Government considers the transition to a low carbon emission economy as an opportunity to boost growth and increase the productivity of the Country.

Piedmont and Turin are well known for their successful small and mid-size enterprises (SMEs) but also for the presence of multinational companies of international relevance. However, the potential deindustrialization of this region is a threat and Turin has been indicated by the Italian Government as an area of complex industrial crisis with a significant impact on national industrial policy. The industry’s ecological transition as well as a wider concept of innovation needs to be embedded in the territory to ensure a sustainable future

Environment Park is currently hosting a large number of companies in the heart of Torino city, and it’s working with even more at regional level in the Clean Tech and Energy Innovation Cluster CLEVER, a network of SMEs big companies, utilities, Universities, and research centres engaged in the ecological transition.

As a Technology Park that has been working for over 20 years on innovation and environmental sustainability, we want to publicly express support for the objectives of COP26, with the active contribution of the companies and stakeholders of the Park and in collaboration with the CLEVER Cluster.

For those reasons, Environment Park is committed to hosting a dialogue on innovation related to a low carbon society, involving young students and workers, as well the Environment Park community. In particular, the community of businesses and innovators, intends to collaborate to achieve the goals of the ecological transition.

With this aim, we will launch a collaborative initiative in which the companies that operate in the Park and in the Cluster can use their skills and capabilities together with those of young students and workers, to create more resilient and sustainable local communities.

Envipark, as a Technology Park, will promote a challenge, involving universities and companies, based on the dialogue on the ecological transition. The potential to significantly boost the ecological transition of the territory will be the first criterium for choosing the winner of the challenge and to find new and replicable ideas. We will create the right format in collaboration with our partners, with the goal to implement the initiative in the next six months.

To quote one of the COP 26 goals – collaboration: “We can only rise to the challenges of the climate crisis by working together”.

Willing to be part of the change, we will therefore promote the collaboration between our network actors and the society for a more sustainable future.
