H2SCORE – Hydrogen Storage and Fuel Cells for Optimised Renewable Energy Communities

H2SCORE is an innovative project that aims to demonstrate how integrating hydrogen technologies into renewable energy communities improves decarbonisation, resilience and energy autonomy.

Specifically, the project develops and demonstrates an integrated Power-to-Hydrogen-to-Power (P2H2P) ecosystem, combining long-duration hydrogen storage with short-term flexibility solutions and multi-vector energy integration. The H2SCORE concept is based on a dual hydrogen architecture:

  • Low-temperature system: PEM electrolyzer, hydride metal storage, and PEM fuel cells for efficient power balancing and rapid response
  • High temperature system: based on a reversible solid oxide cell (rSOC), which operates with hydrogen and biomass-derived syngas, allows for the combined generation of power and heat and improves the flexibility of the system

The benefits of integrating P2H2P solutions within CERs are numerous: energy storage and flexibility, increased self-consumption, clean heating and mobility, and energy autonomy.

The technical concept will be demonstrated in the Municipality of Quarona (VC, Italy), part of the Valsesia Renewable Energy Community (REC), where hydrogen devices will be fully integrated with local renewable electricity generation and the biomass-fired district heating network, optimizing resource and energy use.

Following the demonstration campaign, the concept will be further replicated under different geographical and operational conditions at the following sites: CERs in Switzerland, Hydrogen Valley in Spain, remote communities in northern Canada, other CERs in Italy.

H2SCORE is a Horizon Europe project (ID 101251551) supported by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership and its members and co-funded by the European Union.

Envipark’s role whitin the project

Envipark is in charge of the Communication, Dissemination and Exploitation work packages, curating also the project’ visual identity, website and social media presence.

Furthermore, Envipark will demonstrate a fuel cell-based portable genset in events in Quarona, to further prove how hydrogen can support the local communities. Finally, Envipark will cooperate on the analysis and structuring of the regulatory framework of hydrogen in Renewable Energy Communities.
